They're only interesting in so far as they add a bit of a cultural factor to the older parts of the city (akin to the streetcars I'm familiar with in Toronto and San Francisco), but it's nowhere near as cool as a state of the art el-train or monorail system (like Vancouver's SkyTrain) or an extensive subway system that you'll find in any big city (Tokyo, London, Shanghai, New York, etc.). They're more or less just buses on a small tiny rail built into the road. Both el-trains and monorails are also absent from the new SimCity, by the way.
So since then, I've been using subways a lot less and instead focusing more on el-trains and monorails (together with regular trains and HSR for longer distances). I stopped doing this when I realized that the huge subway net made the transportation way too efficient and as a result I had a lot less control on where I want stuff to grow (as opposed to where the game thinks is the optimum place for things to grow). I used to pave subway below every street, and my city essentially sits on top of this gigantic pipeline of subway that went everywhere. Yes, it's a shame that we're not getting certain transportation options, but i rather have the developers focus on creating a limited amount of real and fully functional networks instead of just cramming the game with as much shit as possible. in the new game, every vehicle on the road, every bus, every train, etc, is a real object simulated in the game and you can watch it depart and arrive at its destination. then there's the fact that the automata isn't persistent so you'd have cars appearing and disappearing at random. the new game fixes this by actually simulating every vehicle instead of just assigning algorithms to everything that aren't very practical. the problem with simcity 4 is that sims would always take the shortest physical route rather than the most effective route.
#Simcity 2000 subway mod#
sure, the real highway mod makes for some beautiful highways and junctions but most of the time they don't function in the way they should and are rendered completely useless, serving no real function other than pure eyecandy. even with the nam, traffic eventually can become overwhelming without properly planning ahead.
#Simcity 2000 subway generator#
without nam, simcity 4's traffic generator was a mess and once your city reached a certain population, it was a total disaster. While the new simcity seems to have less transportation network choices, what's more important to me is that what actually is in the game will be COMPLETELY FUNCTIONAL. having trams kind of makes up for it because i've always been a fan of the network addon mod's tram system but here's the thing that's most important. no real highways and no subways is definitely disappointing to me. it sucks that the transportation choices seem to be somewhat limited. just want to chime in on this whole discussion.
